Cement mixer, bike wreck accident claims 1 life

It can be hard to imagine the outcome of a bicycle accident with a heavy truck. The outcome cannot be good for the bicyclist due to the sheer weight and size of a fully-loaded truck compared to a lightweight bike that offers no protection whatsoever to its rider.

However, that is what happened earlier this month in Fort Lauderdale. Police officers are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision between a cement truck and a bicyclist.

The tragic accident occurred Thursday, Dec. 17 on State Route 7, a little south of the exit for Davie Blvd. According to traffic homicide detectives with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the deceased was hit while riding his bike and then pinned beneath the heavy truck.

A witness to the carnage noticed what happened only after hearing the cement truck driver screaming. He stated, “I heard the commotion and I looked up and [saw] the driver of the truck over here pacing back and forth, freaking out.”

The accident victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The site was barricaded temporarily while police conducted their initial investigation.

For family members of those who are killed in accidents, there is no sum of money that can replace their beloved wife, husband, son, daughter or sibling. There will always be an empty chair at the table and a space in the heart that their loved one occupied. However, many families seek closure through filing a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault party responsible for their family member’s death.

If you find yourself in such a situation, a personal injury attorney can review the circumstances of the death and advise you on liability issues.
