Police in Florida have reported that a pit bull terrier is thought to have bitten a girl as she held a puppy on May 24. The dog bite incident occurred in the northwestern part of Okeechobee County at approximately 5:15 p.m. The age of the girl was not disclosed in an Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office report detailing the attack.
According to the report, the pit bull initially attacked the girl’s puppy, but she was able to separate the two animals. However, the pit bull attacked again after the girl had picked the puppy up. She was then bitten on the lower part of her right arm as the pit bull lunged at the puppy. The bite left the girl with two puncture wounds, and she was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A representative of Okeechobee County Animal Control took possession of the pit bull terrier after the attack. The dog’s owner was said to be unable to show that the dog had received required vaccinations. A deputy said that the dog would not be released until its owner could provide evidence that the dog had been vaccinated.
Dog bites can be extremely painful even when the breed involved does not have a ferocious reputation, but the mental scars can also be significant. Owning a companion animal is a source of comfort for millions of Americans, but many will never experience this because of a childhood incident caused by an irresponsible dog owner. A personal injury attorney may bring a legal action against dog owners when their animals attack others. A lawsuit like this may seek compensation for those who suffer dog bite injuries. It could also help to prevent further attacks by encouraging more considerate behavior from the owners of dangerous animals.
