Many Florida residents may have eaten dried egg products over the last year. If so, they should be aware of the recent recall by Nutriom LLC. The company, which manufactures several egg products under the “OvaEasy” brand name, issued the recall after concerns over salmonella contamination.
Salmonellosis is a serious illness caused by eating food contaminated with the salmonella bacteria. It can cause cramps, diarrhea and fever within 12-72 hours of ingestion and last for up to a week. Although most cases of salmonella go away on their own, it’s a good idea to see a doctor because some severe forms can require hospitalization.
“OvaEasy,” which sells products under the names “Wise Company, Wise Blend” and “Egg Crystal” is recalling products manufactured between Feb. 28, 2013, and Feb. 8, 2014. They contain the phrase “INSPECTED EGG PRODUCTS PLANT 21493G.” It is unknown if any “OvaEasy” products have caused illnesses or consumer death.
Defective products can cause serious illness or injury to consumers. Accidents do happen and even though “OvaEasy” may not have intentionally caused illness to consumers, the company can still be held liable for its negligence. Companies have the duty to thoroughly inspect all products before selling them to consumers and ensuring that they are safe to use and consume as directed.
If any consumers required medical treatment due to illness, they have the legal right to file a products liability claim. The company could be considered a negligent manufacturer and be forced to pay compensation to affected consumers. Damages may include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
