Having a child die would be a tragedy for almost any Florida parent. Having a child die because of a family pet would be even more heartbreaking. That’s the situation that a mother and father face after their infant daughter was killed by their two dogs.
The tragedy occurred on the morning of Dec. 10 in Ohio. The father was asleep on the couch in the living room when the mother walked in to see the 3-month-old baby lying on the floor. She called 911 before 7 a.m. that morning. The baby died about 45 minutes later at a local hospital.
An autopsy showed that the baby died from dog bites and internal injuries caused by the family’s two dogs. It appears that the dogs were playing with the baby and did not viciously attack her. Police have the dogs impounded at the county animal control.
The case is still under investigation. Detectives have been speaking with the child’s father. The case will be forwarded to prosecutors, who will determine whether or not charges will be filed.
This is a sad situation for the parents. To have their child killed and dogs taken away is no doubt devastating. But there are some questions that need to be answered. The child likely would have cried when it fell to the ground and was bitten by the dogs. Why didn’t the father hear her cries? Could it be possible that he was sleeping so soundly that he heard nothing?
Even if the parents did not mean for their child to suffer a dog bite, parents have a responsibility to protect their children from dogs even if the dogs have no history of attacking people. Dogs can snap at any time. In this case, it looks like they may have mistaken the baby for a toy. It was a deadly mistake and now the father could face criminal charges. He will need a solid defense.
